Facebook Android app has made a history of its own by overtaking the iPhone version. For the first time, Andrioid app users have exceeded the iPhone version. Now android app boasts 58.8 million daily active users, while the iPhone version is lagging behind at 57.6 million

This is despite the fact that the iPhone app has been there before the android app was launched. The iPhone app was launched in July 2008, whereas the Android version hit the marlets only in September 2009. Android has maintained a close lead ever since it was launched and has finally succeeded in overtaking the Apple app.

The AppData tracking service revealed the numbers, stating that currently there are 58.8 million daily active users of Andropid app, and 57.6 million active daily users of the iPhone app of Fcebook. However, it also mentions that the iPhone app has 99.5 million monthly active users as compared to Android’s 86.1 million. But analysts consider the daily figure as more important because it is a more accurate way to judge an app’s popularity.

The daily user base reflects a generally expanding user base and implies that Facebook can devote more resources towards developing services for the Android’s platform, in turn rising the user figure even more.

As of now Android is being hailed as the most successful smartphone platform in the world. Handsets running Android operating systems now make up more than 40% of global sales figure. In a recent announcement Google also revealed the statistic that 550,000 Android devices are activated every day.

Another crucial update recently is that Facebook has opted to introduce its new Timeline profile format to Android devices worldwide last week rather than iPhone. It suggests a clear preference for the operating system that is fast growing in prominence.

Facebook, the largest social network, released Facebook for iPhone version 4.1 this Monday. It sports Timeline access on Apple mobile devices. The same was made available for Android devices last week itself.
